Workshop Theme
Software architecture, in education and practice, is primarily concerned with technical issues associated with the quality of software architecture and design. However, as project size increases, leadership and management skills of the architect become more important, to the point where the leadership ability of the project architect can .make or break. a project. This workshop is intended to focus on one often neglected topic of architecture: leadership.
The participants discussed several topics related to leadership and management skills of the software architect. Both experience and research papers were presented on the following topics:
- Best practices
- Lessons learned
- Research in leadership and management
- Software Team dynamics
- The effective management of large teams
- Crisis management
- Human factors in risk assessment
This is an ideal forum for architects, project managers, and other software professionals to exchange ideas and experiences in leadership and technical management.
The workshop theme is leadership and management skills for the practicing software architect. We intend to focus the workshop on critical aspects of leadership that tend to overshadow any technical skills as project size and complexity increase.
Workshop Goals
The workshop is concerned primarily with leadership and management issues. Other workshops and presentations effectively cover the technical aspects of architecture. We hope to derive from the workshop:
- Sharing of experiences with a possible compendium of war stories.
- Compiling a set of best practices in software engineering leadership
- Pitfalls and traps in technical management
- The recognition of early warning signs
- Identification of additional training that software professionals need to accept high level positions of technical leadership on large and/or complex projects.
